“The San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers will play the official opening game of the regular season in Seoul on 20-21 March next year,” Major League Baseball announced on 13 March. The two-game series, dubbed the “Seoul Series,” will be held at Seoul’s Gocheok Sky Dome, a dome stadium, in view of the cold weather in late March.
Seoul will be the ninth time that Major League Baseball’s official opening game will be held outside of the U.S.-Canada region. Major League Baseball has been touring the world since its first overseas game in Mexico in 1996 to “globalise baseball”. Seoul will be the second city in Asia to host the official opening game of Major League Baseball after Tokyo, Japan.
San Diego and the Dodgers, who will play next year’s Major League Baseball opener in Seoul, have strong ties to Korea. San Diego features Korean slugger Ha-Sung Kim. The Dodgers are known for their large Korean fan base, with Park Chan-ho, Choi Hee-seop, Seo Jae-ng, and Ryu Hyun-jin all having played for the club.
