Park Ji-won (27, Seoul City Hall), the new ace of the Korean men’s short track team, dominated the 2022-2023 season and rose to become the world’s strongest.
Park Ji-won won gold medals in the men’s 1000m second race and 5000m relay at the 6th International Skating Union (ISU) Short Track World Cup 6th competition of the 2022-2023 season, which ended in Dordrecht, the Netherlands on the 13th (Korean time). After climbing to the top of the men’s 1500m the previous day (12th) and confirming the overall championship early, he decorated the finale with three gold medals.
With 1068 ranking points this season, Park Ji-won took first place in the individual all-around, beating Hong Kyung-hwan (Goyang City Hall, 674 points) and Stephen Dubois (Canada, 668 points). A total of 14 gold medals won at the 바카라World Cup this season, including nine in the individual event.
Park Ji-won, who won 4 gold medals in the 1st and 2nd competitions, steadily rose to multiple awards from the 3rd competition. He won 2 crowns in the 3rd tournament, 3 crowns in the 4th tournament and 2 crowns in the 5th tournament. In the men’s 1000m 2nd race final of the 6th competition, he ran in 4th place, but with 4 laps left, he showed off his tremendous speed and crossed the finish line with 1st place (1:25:359). As the last runner in the 5000m relay, she overcame a last-minute fight with China’s last runner, Lin Xiaojun (Korean name Lim Hyo-jun), and finished first (6:47, 048).
In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the World Cup Series this season, the ISU presented a special trophy, the Crystal Globe, to the players who placed first in the individual all-around in the 1st to 6th competitions, and Park Ji-won was named the first winner in the men’s division.
Park Ji-won received less attention compared to Hwang Dae-heon (Gangwon-do Provincial Office) and Lee Jun-seo (Seongnam City Hall) because she suffered successive defeats in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics selection matches. However, with the exception of Lee Jun-seo, all members of the Beijing Winter Olympics were replaced, and as a result, the men’s short track team’s men’s short track team’s power weakening concerns were quelled, and it stood tall as a new ace this season.
